Introduction

Linton Chiswick picks the masters of freeform cool. Mmm, nice.

Jazz enters its second century a rich and uncommonly inclusive music. Who would have guessed, back in the early days of the 20th Century, that a jerky, ragged new sound created by Creole musicians on the banks of the Mississippi would provide Time magazine covers, White House concerts, and stick around to become America’s most important original art form? But jazz’s ability to reinvent itself is extraordinary. Reflecting the social and political preoccupations of each decade, it has provided escapist big band glamour, mannered and super-hip small band bebop, funky soul jazz, head-tripping fusion, freedom-hungry experimentation and a thousand Latin, R&B, drum’n’bass crossovers. Conveniently, jazz’s history developed alongside the history of commercial audio recording. So, now, jazz remains all of these things: a music with something for everyone, with goatee or without.
