Introduction
Now the dominant sound, style and dress sense of youth the world over, hip hop's origins were more modest. It emerged during the early 1980s, growing out of New York street parties to radically re-invent the use of DJs and rappers first pioneered by Jamaica's reggae sound systems. Not only did hip hop leap forward by embracing the technology of the age (such as samplers and drum machines) it also addressed dominant urban themes (money, drugs, crime) that would become increasingly mainstream concerns.
