Blues

Introduction

Trevor Hodgett recommends twenty ways to get your mojo (whatever that is) fully operational

"Blues ain't nothin' but a low down, aching chill," sang Son House. "If you ain't had them, I hope you never will."

So the blues is a feeling. But it's also a somewhat variable musical structure most commonly consisting of a twelve bar, three line verse, in which the second line repeats the first. Its precise origins remain obscure, yet by the end of the nineteenth century the music had somehow evolved from its African/American roots - field hollers sung by slaves and sharer-croppers - into myriad sub-styles including 'classic' blues, country blues, boogie-woogie, rhythm and blues, jump, zydeco and electric blues. The form has also been central to the development of both jazz and rock'n'roll, inspiring the likes of Eric Clapton and The Rolling Stones who themselves helped ensure the enduring, international popularity of the genre.
